Joseph Conrad Maher (September 18th, 1939 - April 3rd, 2020)

Looks like the Gates of Heaven have opened its doors to another blessed Soul as Joseph Conrad Maher, husband, brother, father, uncle and grandfather, passed away on April 3rd at St Joseph’s hospital in Yonkers.

Joseph was a resident of Thornwood, NY, and for over 50 years he owned and operated the Maher Funeral Home in Pleasantville.

He is predeceased by his parents, Francis Xavier Maher and Eva Maher, as well as his brother, Francis Xavier Jr.

Graduating Iona College in New Rochelle and Stepinac High School in White Plains, Joe was an active member of Holy Innocents parish in Pleasantville and was a beloved presence among the MaryKnoll community in Ossining.

As a Marine Corp reservist, Joe’s commitment and perseverance to running led him to finish not only The New York City Marathon and Yonkers Marathon twice each, but he remarkably completed the Marine Corp marathon in Washington, DC six times.

Joseph is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Margaret Houlihan Maher, his adoring daughter Tara Scarborough, along with Tara’s husband Kenneth and their children, Joseph and Amanda. In addition Joseph leaves his son Sean Maher, Sean’s husband Paul and their two children, Sophia and Liam Xavier (named for Joseph’s father Francis Xavier). The newest member of the Maher family, Michael James Maher, is the son of Joseph’s youngest, Kevin Francis Maher and his wonderful wife Gabriela.

Joseph also leaves his three loyal and devoted sisters, Patricia (Patsy) Vreeland of Brewster, Carol (Cookie) Schiavo and her husband Bill of Pleasantville, and Liza (Tish) Leonard of of Washington, DC.

And lastly, Joseph will of course be greatly missed by his nieces and nephews, all 15 of them.
