Janet F Marks (Friedman)
Janet Marks, age 87, of New York, NY passed away Friday, December 3, 2021 at St Luke’s Hospital in New York, NY after a prolonged battle with Parkinson’s Disease. She is survived by her daughter, Julia Marks and her sister Mimi Paperman. Janet was predeceased by her beloved husband, Paul Marks in 1981.
Janet Marks was born August 29, 1934 and grew up in Queens, NY. She graduated from Smith College with high honors in the major of political science. She was an incredibly talented athlete. She excelled at basketball, lacrosse, and field hockey. She was also a graceful equestrian and a skillful downhill skier.
Prior to college and after graduating, she worked as an editor at Doubleday. She went on to distinguish herself as a copy editor and copy writer in an era when publishing was dominated by men, first at Time Life and then at Sports Illustrated.
When Janet was in her 50’s, she pursued her love of research through a Masters degree in library science from Long Island University. She utilized those skills in a second career as an archivist for the President of Long Island University. For many years she was instrumental in the research, recipient selection and interviewing process for LIU’s prestigious George Polk Awards in Journalism. The Polk Awards recognize reporting across all media, focusing on the groundbreaking work of the reporters themselves.
Janet’s husband, Paul Marks, was the Executive Director of the American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) during the formative years of rock and roll.
