John Carroll, of Hawthorne, passed away Tuesday December 10, 2019 at New York Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital. He was the husband of the late Marie (DeGirolamo) Carroll. Jack was born in Hastings, NY on March 14, 1918 son of the late Thomas and Catherine (Hickey) Carroll. He graduated from Gorton High School in Yonkers, NY in 1936. After high school he enlisted in the Air Force and served in World War II, fighting in New Guinea, The Philippines and Okinawa. After his military service, he worked for 30 years as a U.S. postal worker in Rye, NY, retiring in 1983. Jack was a very social, charismatic gentleman, who at age 101 lived at home, by himself, until a recent decline. His quick wit, sharp memory and extensive knowledge could keep your attention for hours. He loved watching and talking about sports, current events and history. He was a devout catholic and belonged to Holy Rosary Church in Hawthorne, where he was a member of The Holy Name Society and was also an honorary member of The Hawthorne Reformed Church. Jack is survived by his three sisters in law; Gloria Krebser, who cared for Jack devotedly for three years after his wife’s passing, Dorothy Brenchak and Jeanne Bulanchuk, Eight nieces and nephews; Kevin, John, Richard, Judy, Nancy, John, Donald, and Deborah and several great-nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind many loyal friends and caregivers, who the family would like to thank for all their visits and companionship, it meant the world to him. He was predeceased by his wife, Marie Carroll, sister, Mae McGrath and Niece Linda Madden. Reposing, Hawthorne Funeral Home on Sunday from 2-6 PM. Funeral Mass, Holy Rosary Church, Hawthorne, NY on Monday 10 AM. Interment, Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawathorne, NY to follow. In lieu of flowers donations to either Holy Rosary Church, Hawthorne, N.Y. or Hawthorne Reformed Church, Hawthorne, N.Y., would be appreciated.
