Albert Joseph Caruso (Joe) died peacefully on April 16, 2019 at the age of 96. He was a resident of Hawthorne, New York although he passed while wintering in Snellville, Georgia.
He was born on November 15, 1922 in North White Plains and graduated from North White Plains High School. He enlisted in the Army and served honorably and with distinction under General Patton in World War II, most notably as part of the Normandy Invasion, the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of concentration camps. When he returned, he was a lieutenant in the North White Plains Volunteer Fire Department. He then began his career with the Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), culminating in the position of Superintendent of Transportation.
When he retired, he enjoyed driving a private school bus. Joe also loved gardening, fixing cars and he was the ultimate “handyman”.
Joe is survived by his wife Gertrude (Trudie), his daughter Diane and her husband Robert Stephanic, his sons Joe Mike, Jamie and his wife Diane, Nicky and his wife Meghan, and his stepchildren Dianne Pisarek, Lisa Fithian and David Fithian and his husband Michael Rodriguez, eight grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Dolly. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Caruso and Frances Iquinto Caruso and 9 brothers and sisters.
A wake will be held in remembrance of Joe at the Hawthorne Funeral Home on Monday April 22, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday April 23 at 10:00 a.m., followed by a burial service with military honors at the Kensico Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the North White Plains Volunteer Fire Department or a local veterans group.
